BLOG 1--The One To Get Away

The One To Get Away

The title of chapter one is The One To Get Away.  Who do you believe is the character to "get away" and why do you believe this?  Be sure you are thoughtful in your response.

  1. I believe that the character to "get away" was the little Indian girl that some random girl from the bar put in Missy’s car. Despite the fact the Missy physically got away from home by driving out in her crap car all the way out to Oklahoma, I felt like the little girl had more importance, and was brought to her more so for a certain reason. I could also tell that the little girl was the one to "get away" when the random woman said, "Just take her. And don't go back in that bar." The way I see it, the little Indian girl is an eye-opener to Missy. The fact that the little girl had so many bruises on her body when Missy was giving her a bath shows how much of a rough past she had to go through, considering the fact that she wouldn't let go of Missy even if her life depended on it. It was meant to be that the little girl joined "missy" on the journey that happened by chance. The little girl got away to a happier place, in better hands, especially with Missy's bubbly & caring personality. Although the baby girl is probably scarred for life, she finally left behind the troubles that occurred beforehand. Being a little kid, she probably didn't know anything except for experiencing and remembering the physical pain; and even if she doesn't know it, her life was "saved" by the woman, and missy. The little girl "got away" to a safer environment with practically a brand new start at a good life.

    1. She explains all of the important parts in the chapter and also explains them thoroughly. :D

    2. I loved this because you/she explained it so descriptively and it also helped me to understand better what was going on. (:

    3. I agree, like even though Missy may have left her home, she can start a new with this baby that was abandoned by her mother and show Taylor a new view on things.

    4. This is one is my favorite because it bring opinion, story context, and logic all together. I really thought that I was able to get all of those three important parts out of this. Plus I do agree with part of this, although I think that they both represent someone who got away.

  2. I believe that Missy and the little Indian girl both represented the characters to "get away". Missy had a plan for herself. She knew that she wanted to complete high school unlike so many others and she knew that she wanted to have a real job. This all made her mom very proud of her but I feel like in a way her mom held her back. She didn't give Missy much room to just do what she wants and be creative with her life. However, she knew that as soon as Missy got the car she would be leaving. I do think that her mom did right for her by leading her in a direction of success but I think she was afraid for her to leave. So Missy finally got away from home and had a fresh start. It was all so new. I also believe the little Indian girl was the one to "get away" because she did get away from a very hard life as was described. Her mother had died and the people that were supposed to be her caretakers, didn't even want her. She had bruises and was cold. She clearly had a hard life and could've been in a situation that would've eventually ended in death for her. So the baby got away from that life and left behind the hardships and troubles. She is in a happier and better place now. They both got a fresh new start.

    1. I like this response because i agree with both Missy and the little indian girl being the one to get away. Also, it gives a good explanation why they are the ones to get away. For example, Missy had a plan for herself after she completed high school and wanted to get a real job.

  3. The little girl was the one who needed to get away. She was battered and bruised. If it wasnt for Missy there is a good chance her parents could have murdered her. But because of missy. This little girl has eaten, showered and gotten clean, actually smiled, and got a good night of sleep. Because of Missy this little girl is alive.

    1. I like this one because you told us what happened after the little got away. You give us an idea of what might have happened if Missy didn't save her.You also showed us how she changed after she was in better hands.

  4. I feel like the character to get away was the little girl that the random woman gave to Missy/Taylor. I feel like this character "got away" because from the looks of it, the woman who had given away the child, to me, appeared in my head to be domestically abused, and she wasnt enjoying her life, as the her man kind of imprisoned her, and she gave away the child, giving her a better future, trusting a random person rather than trusting herself and her husband/boyfriend. Also, you could already tell that the little girl had been abused because of the bruises on her. Taylor/Missy was really shocked by it and it would have probably been worse if she grew up with them. So Taylor was like the child's hope.

    1. I like the wording. You put good reasons why Missy/Taylor was the one who got away.

  5. I think the "one to get away" was the little girl and Missy. Earlier on in the chapter she said that if you looked at her and this Newt guy, she said that she was the one out of the pair to "get away". This made me think that she was destined to somehow get away from whatever "it" is. I also thought the baby girl was the one to get away because she needed a better life than what she had because she had been abused, but also that she was given to Missy at random, which showed that she needed the quickest possible escape from the life she was living.

    1. I like this response because it described where Missy said she was the one out of the pair to "get away" and why the baby girl's abuse was what she had escaped from.

  6. I believe the character to "get away" is the little girl who was given away. She is just a little girl who was given away by her mom. With all the bruises that she had when Missy was giving her a bath showed how rough her whole life was. I know I would not want to be treated like that if I was little. But I mean she did not have that decision to be in that position she is now. She is only a little girl and she does not know any better then to just go with the flow and take whatever obstacle is next in her life. I honestly feel she needed a better life and not be treated like that. Just thinking about how your mom would just give you away at that age, just seems so hard to even think about. The little girl had got away to a better place then she was before. It could change/ impact her life. With the way Missy is treating her.

    1. I like this because it was well thought out and went in to the story.

  7. I believe that the person to "get away" was the old lady in the back corner of the restaurant. She had this child for who knows how long because her sister had passed away. Like having the child was just a burden to her. When she saw Missy in the restaurant, she saw it as an opportunity to get rid of the child and then make a run for it. She told Missy to never come back to the restaurant. The lady practically forced Missy to take the child by opening her door and placing it on the car seat. I believe that the old lady believed that by getting rid of the child would allow her to get away from it and move on to something better in her life.

    1. I like how you thought outside of the box and picked someone different to represent "one to get away." Good reasons as to why you chose her as well.

    2. I liked your reply because it was different from everyone elses. I didn't realize the part that the woman may have played until after I read your response. You practically looked at the "small" details that I never really pay attention to. You gave me the chance to look at the story differently, and how it may have impacted her life. Nice response!

    3. I like this because, although it was a really big change, and something forced upon Missy. I think that this comment brings to light, a whole new perspective. Maybe the old lady was trying to keep the child from getting beat even more. What many people would consider a crazy old lady with a beaten, bruised, and filthy child. Was probably a courageous thing, because there is now a possibility that the old lady took the place as now the person to receive the beating, for whatever reason.

  8. I believe that the character to "get away" is the little girl that was given away because she was abused by her mother, but was able to escape from that because of Missy. She will now be able to live a better life with Missy now that she has been removed from her previous life and has the chance to turn it around, with the help and care of Missy. The little girl's life started out hard and it may have gone on that way for a while, but it won't anymore. The fact that she was abused at a very young age can permanently damage her in many different ways as she grows older

  9. I believe that "The One to Get Away" was both Missy and the Indian baby girl that was given to Missy by the stranger. I say this because Missy had to deal with a lot of struggles when it came to the way she was living in poverty, with only her mother with her. The fact that she was able to leave that life and go somewhere new to start fresh showed that she was able to "Get Away" and move on with her life. I said that the Indian baby girl was also "The One To Get Away" because she was saved from having to further deal with a difficult life, full of constant abuse and mistreatment, the minute the stranger gave her to Missy. Being with Missy, the child will be able to lead a far better and happier life than she ever could have with the stranger who gave her to Missy.

    1. I like the fact that you concluded both Taylor and the Indian baby girl because they both are going through tough times in life and you explained that very well. It delivers right to the point.

  10. I think that "The One to Get Away" was both Missy and the little Indian girl. Missy tried to "get away" because she knew what she wanted to do in life. She was different than the other people in her school who were lazy and unmotivated. She wanted to finish high school and have a good future. The little girl tried to "get away" because she had a tough life, as Missy discovered when she saw the bruises all over her body. She was constantly crying and deserved to have a better life. She was innocent and too young to understand everything. Her life would be much better with Missy.

  11. I think Missy is the "One to get away" as she sets on her journey, leaving kentucky, and lives a homeless lifestyle in the Cherokee Nation. Missy, other known as Taylor, has been through many struggles at "home" with her mother and decided to surpass these obstacles in attempt to be independent and hopefully have a new beginning starting in the Cherokee Nation. Escaping the hardships with her mom, I think Taylor will begin to take up responsibility as she is now taking care of an abused baby and also learn to persevere. Having a rough start with Taylor's life (not having a father, tension with her mother), she "gets away" from her past life and sets to brighter future.

  12. I believe that Missy was the "one to get away." Even though the little girl also plays a role in the one who got away, so it may be both of them. Missy was a girl, so it was expected for her to get pregnant, according to her hometown, a large majority of girls got pregnant in high school so they were expected to drop out, hence being completely dependable on the man. Missy survived this trend and was able to finish high school properly. Now she needed to get away from all of that negativity so she left her home. The little girl, however was also living a very harsh life. Her previous guardian gave her away like nothing and when Missy checked her to shower her she found signs of physical abuse. This means that the little girl too was getting away from a life of misery and sorrow, which Missy saved her from. So both were getting away from something that was holding them back.

    2. I liked this one because it is very articulate and it delivers the right point. Missy didn't let herself get distracted and she chose to make a difference not only for herself but also for the little girl. She did what felt right to her.

  13. I think that the one to get away was both Missy and the little girl. I though it was Missy because she didn't turn out like all of the girls who were getting pregnant and dropping out of highschool. She was able to leave her home and escape all of that. The reason I thought it was also the girl was because she "got away" from the abuse that she had to face.

    1. I like your comment because i agree with you. I also think that both the characters were the ones that escaped, because both were running away from something that was potentially taking them down.

  14. I think the character who “gets away” is Missy also we can call her Taylor. From her family I know the place she lives is the male works outside and the female stays home and waits their husband back home. She leaves her house by her “no window” car. She changes her name to Taylor. When she sees many bruises in the baby’s body, she know she needs to leave that place and have a new start.

  15. "The One to Get Away" is the little baby that was given up by her mom. This woman came out to Taylor’s car and gave her a baby wrapped up in a blanket saying it belonged to a sister that died. That just gives her baby another opportunity in life. The woman explained that the baby had nothing and is “nobody that matters”. It was born in a Plymouth. The woman then rode away in a pickup truck, leaving the baby in Taylor’s car. It's great because if she was raised by someone claiming the child as "nobody that matters" then she would be a god awful mother. With that kind of mindset, I highly doubt she could raise herself.

  16. the character that got away was missy. i guess that since her childhood was messed up with her dad being drunk and her mom hurting her physicaly changed a lot of things that could have happened and helped her in the current situation that she's in right now.

    1. I agree with this because I also believe that Missy left because of her parents' abuse

  17. The one who got away was Missy, or Taylor. This is because she was the only one that figured out what life was. By leaving her home to find where she will be in life, she has decided to take the first step in the big journey ahead of her.

  18. The one to get away was the indian girl and Missy as well. The indian girl was abused by her mother and wanted to get away. She wants to move away from home and leave her life in Kentucky. Missy avoided getting pregnant but lives with negativity in her area. She wants to get away from this negativity and begin a new life somewhere else.

  19. I think that the character that got away was Miss Marietta. This is because she buys her own car and drives away from her family and the job that stressed her out. She was also trying to get away from where she was traumatized, which was the place where Newt Hardbine's father and Jolene were both severely injured.

  20. Missy is a middle aged women who works at a hospital in Kentucky. I believe this because she said that she was going to drive as far west as her little bug car can take her. Now she can explore a different part of the world and actually has to look over someone other than herself.

  22. I believe that Missy is the character in the story that is the "one to get away" because she is constantly showing throughout the chapter how she searches for some sort of way to, in a sense, get away from where she originally is. She talks about how there are the people that will grow up and remain where they are and those who decide to make something of themselves and leave to find a better life. She shows how she doesn't want to get stuck in one, small place forever and sets out looking fore more. She eventually, after graduating and working the same job for five years, is able to drive off and leave to discover more about herself ad the world. She feels held back by almost everything and everyone in her hometown. But, unlike the rest of them, she wants to change that.

  24. I thought the character to "get away" was the main character, Missy because she just starting driving away her hometown to go somewhere. She planned how it all would've started but not how it ended. It seemed like she just wanted to isolate herself. She just wanted to get away and do something. I also feel like her plan is to just go with the flow. Go wherever the road takes her. SHe has no specific plans yet.

  25. I think that the one that got away was Missy. I also believe that the one that got away was the child because not only did Missy get away from her abusive mother and her alchoholic father, but the child will not have to go through the same childhood that Missy did.

    ReplyDelete
  26. I believe that the character that "was the one to get away," was the little girl and Missy. The little girl wasn't one to have a great childhood and I think that that was one of the big contributors. She grew up with bad parents at both ends, her dad being an alcoholic and her mother making her a victim of abuse, I believe that if this weren't the case then her situation could be better. I believe that the author wanted us to think that she was the one by the way that she had us discover her signs of abuse so early on in the story. Missy on the other was one who wanted to get away because of all the negativity around her. Although Missy, unlike many other girls her age, didn't drop out of high school due to pregnancy, she still wanted to escape her "home". Missy, taylor, manages to leave her hometown, going away from her dependence, and having to take care of newly presented responsibilities.
