BLOG 3: Mattie

What are your thoughts on the character of Mattie?  What role do you believe she will play in this novel?  Again, be thoughtful in your responses!

  1. Mattie is a women that helps hide illegal immigrants in her home. I think that she id part of the reason they say that America is the land of opportunity. She is helping random people to make their lives better which is maybe why they decided to come over the boarder. I think Mattie will be kind of a mentor or someone others characters can go to when they have questions or if they need help with making a good decision on something.

    1. How do you know this if we didn't even read the chapter yet? How do you know she helps illegal immigrants in chapter 3? What is in Chapter 3 that shows you this?

  2. I think Mattie is a really cool character. She reminds me of Taylor in a lot of ways, such as how compassionate and tough she is. Another thing that shows how similar she is to Taylor is the fact that she is a woman who knows how to take care of herself and do things (like own a tire place) that normally people in that society/time period would expect men to do. I feel like she understands people on extremely complex levels, but also really simple levels. She seems like there is more to her than what is on the surface, and I suspect that we will soon find out more about her.

I believe that she will play a key role in this novel. I get the feeling that she is the one that is in charge of the illegal immigration operations and that she is going to convince Taylor to start helping her with it. I got this feeling when Taylor asked if she had any grandkids of her own, and she responded by saying "something like that." I think she thinks of her little illegal immigrant babies as her own in a way.

(Before you ask, no, I have not read the book. I'm just going off of my observations.) :)

  3. Mattie is a really nice character who appears to have great morals. From the second Taylor and Turtle showed up. She kind of reminds me of a grandmother figure. She takes care of Taylor and Turtle. She took a liking to turtle enough to make her feel good. Perhaps if Taylor stays in Tuscon she will take over the role of a Grandmother. She could get Taylor a job, and help raise Turtle (although I'm not sure if she can be saved, on account about how she was beaten and raped).

  4. I think that Mattie has the personality of a nurturing mother. She was kind to all the people that had come to her shop, which included Turtle and Taylor. Rather than coming off as an aggressive and impatient person, she gives off such a positive and bright vibe. She practically took in Taylor, as she continuously wanted to make sure that Turtle was content with the amount of food she was consuming. She cared so much about them, and gave them so much hospitality without knowing an inch about them; which shows how genuine of a person she is. Her character also shows that she's a very intelligent woman, and knows her stuff. You could tell that she knows her cars inside out, and is very observant of everything. She has the type of personality to put others before herself. For example, Taylor thought that she was being nice so that Taylor would buy tires off of her, when in reality, all she wanted to do was cheer them up because she thought they had a bad day. She had no problem sharing what she had. But the brightness of her personality also makes me think about the past she has gone through, with the way that she talks about her family and her husband. She definitely knows how to stand on her own, though.
In this novel, I think that Mattie will be the type of person to take people in. She didn't immediately turn Taylor away like others would. She wants people to feel comfortable around her as much as possible. Mattie would probably become a "care-taker" or become a closer character to Taylor. She will probably continuously do more for her, just so that Taylor's life could be complete. Since she cares so much about others, she'll probably turn her tire store into a place where people can change their future. With her knowledge and the amount of respect she has towards others, she could change a lot of people's lives. Maybe she'll do something with the garden she has; such as donating and helping out those in need around her city. She could give these people jobs, while still remaining humble. I can also see Mattie as a "grandma" figure to Turtle. Since Mattie is practically the only one that Taylor has within miles, I feel like Taylor would slowly let loose of her "independent" barrier, and start depending on Mattie for a lot of things coming up in the future. Mattie probably set the bar for the type of person that Taylor wants to become.

  5. I think that Mattie seems like a great person so far. She seems to really care about everyone and she wants to help as much as she can. She acts like a mother. Mattie has such a positive personality and will go above and beyond what people need or even want. She took Taylor and Turtle in and really helped them. Without her, they would've probably been stuck some where with nothing to eat or drink. Mattie had great intentions by wanting mainly just to cheer up Taylor. She sensed something that showed her that Taylor was depressed and she did everything in her power to cheer her up. It wasn't about the business or getting money, it was simply just seeing the happiness of some one else. She seems independent and like a leader. I think that in the future, Mattie is going to continue to help people by taking them in or giving them anything that they need. I feel like Taylor is going to become good friends with her and go to her for everything and when she needs some cheering up.

  6. Mattie seems like a thoughtful person with a good heart. She does things without recognition or rewards, and doesn't expect anything in return. She is also very helpful to Taylor when she meets her. She is very positive and tremendously compassionate, affectionate, and mindful of those around her and those she's just met. I feel like that might get her into trouble later on, though. I feel like Mattie will continue to be a very kind and caring person; and that Mattie will continue to help Taylor and Turtle throughout the story. Maybe she will influence Taylor and Turtle in a remarkable way, and be a role model for them as they go through life if Mattie plays an important or crucial role in the story.

  7. I think Mattie is the motivation that Taylor needed. She provided all the essential needs that Taylor needed for her and Turtle. It was nice to see something good happen to Taylor. After all that Taylor has been through, although she never gives up, meeting Mattie may have brought happiness to Taylors life. I also think of Mattie as a mother figure to Taylor as she expresses kindness and love towards her and Turtle. I was a bit skeptical to see the amount of care Mattie had for Turtle and Taylor without knowing little to anything about them. It was nice to see Taylor gain not only a mother figure, but also a friend that would help her along her journey.

  8. I believe that Mattie will be much like Taylor's mother. Mattie seems very positive and was very helpful. An example of her positivity is how she never reacts badly to any bad news, but instead always fixes the problem or just understands the truth. An example of Mattie being helpful was when she gave Turtle something to eat and drink, which kept the kid busy during Taylor's visit to Jesus is Lord Used Tires. I think that she will bend Taylor's decisions and opinions into a more moral and positive direction.

  9. I believe that Mattie is what Taylor needed in her life. She gives Taylor the job at Jesus Is Lord Used tires and helps her conquer her fear of exploding tires. Basically Mattie will do good needs to others but she would not ask for anything in return. I feel like she would do more for Taylor just so that she can experience the good that she had missed in her life rather than seeing the bad. Mattie is a strong Independent person. Motherlike women to Taylor because she took a good amount of care for both Taylor and Turtle. In the end of the novel, she would probably continue to do this good need to others as well but at the same time there could be a little twist at the end.

  10. In a way, Mattie is another Taylor. She carries herself with such confidence. She is a woman with her own tire shop, which in Taylor's old hometown, would have been shutdown. When the customer looking for something for his ORV, she showed no signs of annoyance. She just did her job. I think Taylor meeting Mattie was a bit of a confidence boost on her behalf. It made her have a sense of hope. Mattie welcomed her with open arms overing snacks and a beverage, even though they had just met.

I get the sense that Mattie helps immigrants. When the second guy in the shop came and left, Taylor said she saw Indians in the back of his car. The guy was also in a hurry and seemed like he knew where he was. This gives me the impression that he had been to the tire shop before. Also, I wonder where Mattie got her extensive knowledge of children, if she had one, or "something like that."

    1. Good close reading to figure out Mattie is indeed helping illegal immigrants. Her house is like a sanctuary hence the name Jesus is Lord Used Tires.

  11. I really felt that Mattie was a person who took care of illegal immigrants. It was also pretty obvious when Taylor saw the people crammed in the car looking like they were in a rush. Another give away was how big Mattie's house was. Everything she had was perfect for taking care of people. She had food, shelter, and protection as well, in a way. Overall, Mattie really is a nice woman for helping Taylor and Turtle and I would also say that it is nice of her to take care of people in general. Honestly, I have mixed emotions whether what she is doing for a living is good or bad because I see it as both. But Mattie really seems like a one man, or woman, support system. That is what I think her role in the story will be, being a huge support system for Taylor, Turtle, and possibly other important characters too.

  12. I think that Mattie is a really good person. She has that personality that people tend to gravitate toward because she's so friendly and kind. Even though she barely knew Taylor and Turtle, she took care of them and wanted to help cheer them up. She has a motherly instinct of taking care of people. She will probably continue to help Taylor and Turtle and support them as much as she can. I also think she will have a very important role in the story whether she would be a good person or a bad person.

  13. I feel like Mattie is the type of person who is very open and kind and loving to anyone, doing everything she can to serve others. Mattie also is really patient, as the man Roger, seemed to be bossy with her. She also was really kind and nice to Turtle and Taylor, as she fed her and helped em out. I also feel like the name of the mechanic shop "Jesus is Lord's" will resemble something in the story about how kind and Jesus-like Mattie is. Also, i feel like Mattie is good with kids maybe because she has a family with grandkids, but how that man that Taylor described as a Junior Varsity Priest's van was full of Native American people, i feel like Mattie helps them because she is so kind to everyone. The fact that the story is now in Tucson adds more reasonable info how Arizona is right next to Mexico and Native American Reservations that she can be sneaking them into America. That priest looking man with his van full of Native American looking people make it sound really fishy, plus the fact that Mattie is the way she is, kind and opening to anyone, kind of supports the fact that she could be helping them. Also, how her shop is bigger than a typical mechanic shop.

  14. Mattie is quite similar to Taylor in that she is a very independent and strong person. She acts as a second support system for Taylor. She, in a way, inspires Taylor because of her personality and how she treats others. She carries herself in a similar way to Taylor, meaning that they both treat themselves with as much respect as they do with others. Mattie is very welcoming and doesn't judge and even tries helping Taylor, especially when she sees her with Turtle. I think that, as the story develops, Mattie will be a very significant character in Taylor's life and will help form Taylor's character and the way she sees the world and others in it.

  15. I think that mattie is the kind of girl to be able to stand up for herself and not have to depend on others un like lou ann who is always asking and needing help. Mattie and Taylor both seem like the complete opposite of the kind of woman that was in their day. Women were thought to be dependent at home and always helping their husbands while these ladies are very much the opposite like some inspireing teachers we have here at moreau.

  16. Mattie is the owner of Jesus is Lord Used Tires, showing that she knows how to take charge and take control of her life. She's also a very kind, open, caring woman because unlike most store owners that want to sale and make profit, Mattie doesn't care she just wants to by giving Taylor a cup of coffee and Turtle apple juice with crackers. Mattie isn't judging Taylor and Turtle whent hey first walk in too. She's a bit like Taylor since both are tough and dedicated to being independent. Mattie is also shown to be very good with kids, and I feel like she's going to play a very postivie and important character in this story by the way she teats the both of them.

  17. Mattie and Taylor seem very similar to me. They are both very independent women. Mattie also seems like a very honest and caring person. She kept paying attention to Turtle and trying to help her out. She is also strong because she is different from most women during her time, because she owns her own shop, and because men go to her for help, which makes her seems stronger then men. I think she will play a very important role in this novel. She will probably be Taylor's role model and what she will want to turn out like when she is older.

  18. I think Mattie will be an inspiring character for taylor, and will, in a way, be taylors role model. Mattie is a woman that independently runs her own business. She is a caring person that also seems to have delt with children before. She helps turtle out and makes her feel better. She stands out, like taylor, from society because she is independent. Most women of this era where just housewifes. I Think her role in the book will be small, but meaningful, as she seems to be the older taylor.

  19. Mattie seems like a very nice character because of how she treated her customers. I al so believe that Mattie will be further involved in the story and play a big role in the rest of the plot as an inspirational "sidekick" for Taylor. Both Taylor and Mattie are very similar in the sense that they are both independent girls because Mattie works at a store while most women are housewives during the time.

  20. The character Mattie is very different from other women we have encountered in the story. She is very similar to the ideal person Taylor wishes to be. Mattie is very independent and is such a nice person. Mattie was so kind and considerate toward Turtle and assisted her with out hesitation. Mattie bypasses the stereotype that women are categorized in. Women are seen as people that are suppose to be at home watching over their children and assisting their man in anything he wants. Mattie however proves this stereotype to be false by owning her own tire shop and it is seen that she even helps the men that walk in, so she is seen as the dominant one instead of vise versa. i think that Mattie is going to play a pretty big role in this story as the example that Taylor want to be. She is going to be Taylor's role model.

  21. Mattie is a very kind person. She likes kids. She helps Taylor for her car and takes them in her room and gives them food to eat. She takes care of Taylor and Turtle, and Turtle seems like her much than Ms. Hoge. She also very independent because she has her own place and she know how to fix the tire, that she can get money. She has good observation so she can know what Taylor and Turtle thinking. Mattie is one of the significant people in Taylor’s life.

  22. I think that Mattie is very kind and compassionate person. She seems very calm around kids. She seems to be a mix between the two characters (Lou Ann and Taylor). She is a very independent person, but at the same time uses the option of having a kid to get what she wants. She seems to know what the other people are thinnking and is always in control.

  23. Mattie was a very kind person in this story. In fact, I feel like she was too kind of a person. I saw her as a person that would go across the world to help someone in need because she is such a helping person.Throughout the chapter, it looked as if Taylor wanted to be like Mattie, for she knew a lot about cars, she is very independent, and was very caring. Her role in the story looks like she will be helping a lot of people get through struggles, especially illegal immigrants.

  25. Mattie is a character who is caring and loving to everyone. No matter what someone's problem is, she would always find a way to make it better. Her role will probably be helping Taylor with her struggles. She will probably be able to help others too when she gets a chance to.

  26. Mattie is a caring character that likes to help everyone, no matter how bad the problem is. I think her role is to help put Taylor throughout the book

  27. I feel that Mattie id the type of character that wants to be the bigger person and always go by the rules. What I think is that she wants to play as the Mother character in the book. So far I have seen her as the mother character. What she is doing is she is trying to make people better around her by making sure that they know what it is like to have a other and what they should do when they become better moms. This is the type of person that Taylor wants to be.
