BLOG 2--Lou Ann Vs. Taylor

In chapter two, we meet a new character, Lou Ann.  Compare/Contrast Lou Ann to Taylor (Missy). What do they have in common and how are their personalities different?

56 comments:

  1. Lou Ann and Taylor are practically different people. Taylor is a girl that is always ready to explore what the world has set before her, and likes to think independently about herself. She wants a strong future, and is willing to work hard for it. Lou Ann, on the other hand, is already married and becomes pregnant. But unlike Lou Ann, who's “naturally” pregnant, Taylor gets handed a random child at the bar. Taylor has a very confident and cheery personality, while Lou Ann likes to hide her feelings, and take out her anger and depression things like eating. Taylor has the type of mentality to not give up, while Lou Ann just goes with the flow, rather than fixing her problems even if they hurt; meaning she can't deal with pain easily. She’s more dependent upon people rather than doing things herself; as on the night of Halloween, she couldn’t take her own shoes off because Angel had left. Lou Ann also comes off as the one that's most afraid to do things. Lou Ann gives in easily under pressure; for example, when the kids came over to trick-or-treat, she forgot candy, so she ended up giving up pennies that she had saved up. Taylor is the "fighter"; although she didn't know what to do with the baby, her nurturing personality abled her do everything she could to make the baby girl as comforted as possible. They're family background is also very different. Lou Ann's mother isn't as supporting as Taylor's mother is. The way they were raised was practically the way they became. Lou Ann acts if her life is under wraps, and Taylor would let the whole world know if she could.

Despite the fact that they are so much different, they are also very alike. They both come from a rough family background. Taylor's father had left, and her mother could care less about him. Ironically enough, Angel (the father of the child Lou Ann is carrying) had left as well. Through these similar stories, both Taylor and Lou Ann are very independent, as they are forced to make decisions in limited amounts of time. Lou Ann and Taylor are also both far away from their hometowns to live their own lives. Even if Lou Ann has a more depressing character, they both seem to have the same sense of pride; they live to impress other people, and have very determined personalities. For example, Lou Ann was very determined to prove to her mother that Mexicans were good people through the amount of money or social stance they have in a certain society. Taylor showed her determination through getting a job, and having the mentality to not get pregnant and finish school. They both also like doing things by chance but they just handle it differently. For example, Taylor wanted to change her name to the city that she would end up in after she loses gas; which made the outcome unthinkable. Lou Ann let her marriage fall to pieces as she never spoke up to Angel months after his accident. They both don’t like being reminded of things, which gives them both the mentality to move forward. Lou Ann didn’t want her child to be born around Christmas day because it would remind her of the accident, and Taylor didn’t want to remain in one area.

    1. This is great! It's so descriptive and I like the way you elaborated on the topic given. You really went into it and showed that you actually read the story. (:

    2. I like this because of how you voice your thoughts, clearly stating how they are both alike and not alike, and how people in their lives affect them

    3. I really like your comment because I really liked that you pointed out about how Taylor was given the child, this brings up the fact that she has the choice of whether or not to take care of the child. And I also like that you bring up how, on Halloween, Lou Ann left her shoes on because Angel wasn't there with her to take them off for her. This expresses their difference of how Taylor is independent and how Lou Ann is more reliant on others. But I really agree with you in how you described their similarities and how their backgrounds are similar.

  2. Taylor and Lou Ann are 2 distinct different characters. Despite the obvious difference that Taylor had a baby brought to her and Lou Ann is actually pregnant, they both have differences in personality. Taylor is an independent young adult who has set her life on a path of succession. With confidence and drive, she has the right mindset to exceed all expectations. Having an adopted Indian child, Taylor begins to learn the values of responsibility as another life is in her hands other than hers. Through all obstacles, Taylor grows to maturity as she has found her "head rights" (Indian baby). Lou Ann, on the other hand, is less confident and is concerned of what people think of her (low self esteem). Unfortunately her husband, Angel has lost a leg in a car accident. Angel's accusation of Lou Ann about her "wanting to sleep with other people" lead to their separation. Lou Ann is now on her own (like Taylor), pregnant. She struggles physically and emotionally. Further within the story, I infer that Taylor will boost Lou Ann's confidence as Lou Ann will teach Taylor a couple of things. With their differences, they both have the same goal, but have different ways in which they persue it. Along with this, Lou Ann and Taylor came from an unstable family background as both of their fathers left. With this in mind, they both become independent seeking a brighter future with the past behind them.

    1. I really like what you wrote because it is straight to the point. You clearly pointed out Lou Ann's side of the story and Taylor's. Also, when you said that Lou Ann will learn from Taylor later on.

  3. Lou Ann and Taylor are so different from one another. For one, both were brought up in such different ways by such different people. Taylor's mother is so supportive and loving towards her daughter. She always boosts her up, comforts her whenever she is feeling down, and always supports, as well as respects, the choices her daughter makes. Lou Ann's mother on the other hand, is judgmental, racist, and unsupportive of her daughter's choices. Taylor and Lou Ann also differ a lot in their personalities. Taylor is the type of person that goes and does something to make it happen instead of waits for it to happen on its own (that is if it ever will). Lou Ann is the exact opposite. She will think to herself how much she wants things to change but she won't actually go and make it happen for herself. Taylor actually tries to solve her problems whereas Lou Ann just waits for everything to unravel and fall apart (like she did with her marriage to Angel). Lou Ann also does not stick up for her beliefs and her thoughts on certain issues, whereas Taylor is not afraid of making her views and opinions known to others. Lou Ann lives with fear and does nothing about it, whereas Taylor confronts any fears she has and tries to find ways of getting rid of them on her own. In these ways, Taylor is very independent. Lou Ann always has to have someone with her or else she feels lost, alone, and cannot function on her own. An example of this would be when Angel left her. She had been so dependent on him that when the kids came over to her house on Halloween, she did not have any candy, so instead of just saying no to them, she ended up giving them the money she had been saving up for a long time. Also, she was not able to take her own shoes off afterwards because she had relied so much on Angel to do so. She just could not cope with being alone, which is why I characterized her as being very dependent on others.

The two, however, do have some similarities. Both of them have had to deal with abandonment because Taylor's father left her and her mother when Taylor was young, and Lou Ann's husband left her and her unborn child while she was, of course, still pregnant. They both had to face the adversities that came with those situations, even if they handled them differently. It was still difficult for them all the same. Both of them are also really strong willed. I say this because Taylor tried so hard to make a life for herself that didn't include getting married and getting pregnant, and Lou Ann tried so hard to prove to her mother that marrying a Mexican man was not as terrible as her mother might believe. They did not give up and that showed how resilient they were.

    2. I like this common because it has many details for different and similar. There are many comparison between Taylor and Lou Ann. Many own thought.

  4. They both have simularities because they are both alone with a child. Lou ann is a single pregnant mother because her husband left, and Taylor was given a random abused child at a bar that she is now forced to take care of. Lou ann is presented as a weak person who doesn't stand up for her self, or towards her husband Ang-hel. In the reading you can see how powerless she is when she says that whenever she argues with Angel it feels as if her bones were made of something like rubber in a Gumby doll. But Missy is the total opposite taking no disrespect from anyone.

  5. One thing that Taylor and Lou Ann have in common is that, in some point in both of their lives, they each looked at their lives and were displeased with what they saw. They both had wanted to see a change be made in their lives; but the difference is that they each took different routes upon making that realization. Taylor decided to do go out and, through her actions, make change happen in her life to make it better. Whereas Lou Ann felt that waiting for someone or something to make her life better was the right path to take. The two girls are also alike in that they felt that leaving their hometown and the people in it that held them back would help them move forward. But from there on, they took different views on how to see life. Lou Ann's life became a cycle of discrimination and loneliness because she couldn't find a way to escape. And Taylor's life was a cycle too, but she made the difference by trying to find a way to break the cycle and draw out her own plan in life.

  6. Lou Ann and Taylor are two different people. Taylor is independent and assertive, believing that she does not need and will never need a man. She avoids marriage and children until, she is given an abandoned Indian child. Although she is quite confident and headstrong. she is not unwavering in her determination, and sustains herself through confidence in her. On the other hand, Lou ann is both a new mother and recently separated from her husband, Angel who leaves her on Halloween before giving birth to her son. Lou Ann considers every single unlikely calamity that may fall because of her dream that her son would not live to see the year two thousand. She is worried on what others think about her and offending friends who may abandon her.

However, the two have similarities. Both Taylor and Lou ann are lone with a child. Taylor was given an abandon child and Lou Ann's husband had left her while she was still pregnant. They each handled each situations differently. It was still difficult for them to handle because they are alone and no one to help them but themselves. Taylor tried to make her life without getting married and getting pregnant, while Lou Ann proves that marrying a Mexican man was not as bad as her mom thought.

  7. Taylor/Missy and Lou Ann are both different but also very much the same. Taylor/Missy seems to be less submissive when you compare her to Lou Ann because Lou Ann was presented as a housewife who never had any say in what she wanted. Lou Ann almost always settled in defeat and never said anything against her husband's decisions and opinions when she felt the decisions and opinions were wrong. Although she didn't never stood up for herself, she didn't have anybody to encourage her, unlike Taylor, who had her mother to help her through her difficult times. The child that Taylor is taking care of was physically abused while Lou Ann's unborn child has yet to be abused. Lou Ann and Taylor are both taking care of a child on their own and have problems with men around them.

    1. Yea they are both single mothers but we are unsure as the reader if Lou Ann will keep the baby because she is described as a weak person. I like this because i feel like they are both struggling becasue they are alone.

    2. I like this because you showed a little background info before you got to the point of the discussion. This is good because if any audience that did not know about the story, they would get a little background. Good job expressing their similarities and differences.

    3. I agree, Taylor is mature and has the right mind set but I dont think she can actually handle having a kid. Lou Ann actually planned out her pregnancy but never stood up for herself but she loved so much and is very caring.

  8. I feel like Lou Ann and Taylor are completely different people! Taylor really wanted to explore the world. She didn't want to have a plan and do what everyone else was doing. She wanted to be independent and work hard, while still exploring on her own. She had great support from her mother and was raised well. She has a good head on her shoulder and believes in herself. Her mother has always encouraged her so she has a good foundation. Lou Ann wanted more of that "typical" life in a way. She wanted to just have a nice family and settle down early. She was married and pregnant and was ready and excited to be a mom. She hid her feelings and was not independent at all. She did what other people told her to just to make them happy. She didn't stand up for herself but it seemed like she also didn't have anyone there for her. She lived far away from her family and her mom didn't like her husband. Her husband was all she had and he didn't care about her. Also, Taylor was given a child when she wasn't planning or prepared to raise a child. While, Lou Ann is pregnant and wanted to have a family. Now they are both having to raise a child on their own but with different circumstances.

  9. First of all, both of these characters, Lou Ann and Taylor, are very hardworking women who are more prepared than most people in the story. Like how the Hardbine's family is just a mess, disorganized, and not very responsible. They have no specific goal to work for whatsoever. Speaking of goals and the future as well, Taylor and Lou Ann both have goals ahead of them now, since both of them are taking care of babies/young toddlers. Taking care of a baby or a young toddler, for possibly the rest of your life, takes a lot of commitment, dedication, and responsibility. These two characters at this point of the story definitely have represented/showed us that they are well prepared and ready for to tackle their goals. Smaller connections that each of them includes having family members in Kentucky. Now, we have the differences of Lou Ann and Taylor. One HUGE one is that Lou Ann's life wasn't much like Taylor's. She is married, even more responsible, dedicated, and prepared than Taylor. Taylor sort of just prepared herself for the start of her journey. "I don't know where the journey where end. But I know where it starts." These lyrics were taken from the song, Don't Wake Me Up, by Avicii, and this pretty much describes Taylor. She is just like Lou Ann, but a little less of everything. One other small difference is that Lou Ann bears a child through pregnancy and Taylor was just randomly given a baby out of where, literally.

    1. This is a good reponse to how they are similar and how they are different. For example you gave examples for each person on how they relate to eachother. It shows perhaps how they could bond with one another

  10. As much as Taylor and Lou Ann appear to be opposites, they have one thing in common. They are both alone trying to take care of children, but are having some trouble taking care of themselves first. Other than the fact that Lou Ann's baby is actually hers and Taylor's is just a random lady's late sister's daughter, they are in the same situation.
Now the differences between Taylor and Lou Ann are major. They are clearly stated. Taylor is shown as this independent women, who unlike others at this time, was able to carry herself steadily throughout her life. She supported herself by getting herself a job at a hospital. Taylor made bold decisions for herself such as making the decision to leave Kentucky to start a new. Taylor never showed any signs of fear or regret. She was always confident in herself, which she gained from her mother who supported her since she was a child.
Lou Ann on the other hand does not hold a very confident disposition. Her mother highly despises her marriage, which unlike Taylor's mother, is vey unsupportive. Later in Lou Ann's life, especially during her marriage with Angel, she was fairly submissive. She had no say for herself and just did what would please others around her. AS the book says, she would wake up extra early just to make sure she made breakfast in time. Whenever, Angel and she would ague, she would just sit there, soaking in all the insults being thrown at her. Taylor, for a fact, would not tolerate that.

  11. Missy/Taylor and Lou ann are very different people with different backgrounds and events happening in their life. However they are also similar in several ways too. Lou ann doesnt seem to be happy and have much family, as Taylor does, she went to school, had a job, and left her hometown. Lou ann and Angel, her husband, grew apart in their relationship and she is having a baby. Both however, end up with a baby, alone. Taylor's mother is very supportive of her and pushes her to do things she wants and to be a good person, and Lou ann on the other hand, her mother really dislikes and hates Lou Anns relationship. Taylor and Lou Anne are mainly opposite in their freedom. Lou ann seems trapped and unhappy while Taylor is the exact opposite. They do have some similarities like how both characters had a struggle/mishap in their family,They both ended up with a baby, and both become independent as people. Taylor and Lou Ann are both interesting characters, and it will be interesting to see what will happen, if they meet each other, ass Taylor is heading in Lou Anne's direction.

  13. Taylor and Lou Ann seem very different but also have some similar qualities. Both Taylor and Lou Ann are just two simple small-town girls. They appear to be very caring and loving, from what I understand from the story so far.
Taylor took the child and didn't put up much of a fight to not take it. When Lou Ann's husband decided to leave her, she just kind of let it happen and didn't really pay too much attention to the matter, probably because she felt powerless. In this way, they are similar because they just let these things happen to them, when they could have said no or stopped the situation from advancing.
Taylor seems pretty bold and confident in herself, while Lou Ann is more shy and passive. Essentially, Taylor was accustomed to having a good amount of courage and pride because of her upbringing, and that determined who she became as an adult. Presumably, Lou Ann is used to doing things for people, especially her husband, Angel. Angel depended on her for most/almost everything, which then caused her to grow devoted to taking care of him and tending to his every need. She doesn't really have a backbone, and lets herself be oppressed by others. Taylor, on the other hand, would defend herself no matter what.
I guess in the end, they've both got a child to watch after and take care of.

  14. Lou Ann and Taylor are very different attitude wise, but have both been put in the same position, they both now have a child; whereas Taylor rescued the baby she is carrying and Lou Ann is actually pregnant. Taylor is a risk taker, determined, dedicated, independent, and most importantly fight hard to not fall into the norm of her time. Whereas Lou Ann is very dependent of this man who she had in her life, that left her pregnant, on top of this she is very reserved and shy. Taylor has a very positive state of mind and will stand up for what she believes is right, but Lou Ann is just goes with the flow and will just keep her issues to herself rather than speaking up for herself. Now the way Lou Ann acts could come because of the way her mom raised her, because unlike Taylor's mother she didn't set and open minded and great example for her to follow. Apart from the fact that they are different they are both still independent. Another similarity that I saw was that fact that they were both away from where they originally came from.

  15. I think that Taylor and Lou Ann have some similarities in their life. They both had a tough life and grew up in poor families. They were surrounded by people who lacked motivation and were constantly surrounded by negativity. Despite the similarities, I also think that they has differences. Taylor wanted to change the way that she lived because she wasn't happy with it. She knew that she wanted to do good in school and finish school unlike most of the people she was surrounded by. She avoided getting pregnant and was approached by a woman with a baby and the baby was given to her. She knew that if she wouldn't take care of the baby, then it would continue to have a bad life. Lou Ann was married and pregnant. Her mother wasn't very supportive of her. When her husband, Angel, left her, she acted like it wasn't a big deal. She discovered his real personality, but a part of her wished he would come back.

  16. Taylor and Lou Ann were similar to me because both of them don't have any parenting experience, but they are about to become single moms. Taylor has to deal with the child that was given to her, and Lou Ann is about to have a baby. Although they have this in common, I think that they have a big difference in their personalities. Taylor is very independent and isn't like most women during her time. She seems like a person who is strong and can defend herself. Lou Ann seems like the type of woman who can't defend herself. She has to hind behind things to protect herself, like when she was on the bus and people were being nice to her. She acts like the average woman during that time and is almost the opposite of Taylor.

    1. I like your differences/ similarities because I never saw Lou Ann as "hiding" behind things to protect herself. I almost ignored the fact at how hard she worked to be "normal" and to not be so "Depressed" all the time. Great comparisons!

  17. Both Taylor and Lou Ann are very similar but also have many similarities. Both Taylor and Lou Ann are single parents with no parenting experience. Taylor was given her child un-willfully while Lou Ann is about to have a baby, however her husband left her. Both Taylor and Lou Ann are similar because they are having children but are unready, however they are both very different because of how they are receiving their babies.

  18. Taylor and Lou Ann have great differences in their personalities. Lou Ann is about to be a new mother and recently separated from her husband, Angel, who left her on Halloween. She's is just a bundle of phobias and a low self because all the abuse her past relationship causes her. Taylor is more of a positive grown woman who sees the world as an adaptable challenge. Although Taylor is confident and headstrong, she is not constant and that could slow her down with her new child. Lou Ann, however, is a helpless pessimist that constantly needs to depend and rely on someone. She cares about people, but she is just too ready to see the worst things in life. She'd rather be with an abusive husband than alone. Taylor is tough and determined. She sets her mind to something and then accomplishes it, she doesn't get pregnant or drop out of high school because she decided not to. Lou Ann, on the other hand, just waits for things to happen, like when she "expected that a divorce would just develop, like a pregnancy." She avoids arguments and when they happen, Lou Ann doesn't even fight back. But she loves with a passion, and when Angel was injured, she doubled her time to him, it's when he pulls away from her that she loses that feeling and you can see her need of dependence come out. Both now have child, and have to look after independently even though they may not be the fittest for the job.

  19. Taylor and Lou Ann have similarities and differences. A similarity they have is that they are both about to become mothers, and both of them have never been parents before. Lou Ann seems like she is unaware of what is happening and is naive.

  20. It seems that Lou Ann and Taylor are both experiencing hardships by having to raise a child all on there own. The only difference is that Lou Ann will have a child of her own that she did want, while Taylor was given a child that she did no ask for. They both are going to have to overcome the hardships of parenting, they are both inexperienced. A very big difference between Lou Ann and Taylor is that Taylor is very independent and wants nothing to do with settling down with a man, that is why she left. Lou Ann however is the complete opposite she was glad that she had gotten married and that she was going to settle down, she even says she enjoys taking care of her man. While Taylor wishes to explore more opportunities and live life by her own terms, Lou Ann wants to be with a man and wants to depend on the man and wants to settle down and fulfill her typical women role. (As seen by society)

  21. I think they both have lost someone close to them, and they are both going to be single mothers. How ever lou ann wanted a child as missy did not. Missy's child was given to her also, while Lou Ann's child will be coming from her. Taylor has also been a mostly independent person that does not need a man. Lou Ann was happy to have a man, someone that would help her. Lou Ann is only independent when she needs to be, and will not be happy about it.

  22. Lou Ann is similar to Taylor but they still have something different. Taylor and Lou Ann are both have a kid. They both don’t have many money and they leave their house. The different is Taylor ‘s kid was picked from her travel; there are many bruises on baby’s body. But Lou Ann was a pregnant woman. I think the biggest different for them is their attitude to the life. Taylor is a confidence and independent girl; she doesn’t rely on anybody so she left her house by herself and she wants a new beginning. Lou Ann is a woman who is traditional, she always thinks about her husband, she supports everything for her husband.

  24. They are very different people but are similar in some ways as well. They have a different lifestyle, but also have to raise a child on their own. Neither of them have been parents before. Lou ann however, is not very responsive to her surroundings and isnt very productive. Taylor is independant and actually does stuff with her life. She is a better mother it seems than Lou ann.

  25. Lou Ann and Taylor are two very different people. Taylor is a very strong willed character who wants a good future and is willing to work very hard for it. Lou Ann is very relaxed and laid back. She goes with the flow and expects her problems to disappear overtime as long as she does not mess with them. She doesn't feel that she has to face and solve her problems on her own. Both women had babies except Taylor was randomly handed a babe while Lou Ann became naturally pregnant, which is exactly what Taylor did want to become. They also both have people that left them. Taylor's father left her and Lou Ann's husband, Angel, left her on Halloween ironically. This means that they both have complicated and broken families. This results in both of them becoming independent and they both have to make very important decisions for themselves.

  26. Both of them are on their own in some way, taylor is independent and fending for herself, and Lou ann is isolated by her violent husband Angel (Ironic). Lou ann is stuck in the traditional pattern of living as a tool for cooking and abuse, she has a hard time acting for herself and this only contributes to the traditional housewife image that she has set for herself.
